Virgo
Virgo occupies the sixth thirty-degree arc of the tropical zodiac, from 150 to 180 degrees of ecliptic longitude, measured from the March equinox. In the constellation of the same name lies Spica, one of the brightest stars near the ecliptic, and the star Hipparchus used when he measured the shift that became known as precession.
Names, and what the earliest one says
The Babylonian constellation is MUL.AB.SIN, “the Furrow” 1. The figure is agricultural: a furrow holding an ear of grain 1. MUL.APIN names the goddess who goes with it, in a single line that holds the whole thesis of this entry: “The Furrow, the goddess Shala’s ear of corn” 2. The line is quoted from John H. Rogers’s synthesis of the Assyriological editions of MUL.APIN and the Mesopotamian boundary-stone corpus; Rogers is an astronomer working from that scholarship, and where he marks a reading as his own inference, this entry keeps the distinction 2. Shala and her ear of corn are also shown on Kassite boundary stones 2.
The name attached to less than the whole constellation at first. On Rogers’s account, “the Furrow seems to have been just Spica or the surrounding area,” and the label was extended to the whole zodiacal sign only in the last phase of Babylonian astronomy, even as the figure kept the goddess and the grain “that had perhaps grown from the furrow” 2. The Greek name is Parthenos, “maiden”, and the Latin Virgo follows the Greek.
The star name preserves the older reading. Latin spica means “ear of grain”. The wheat sheaf that modern illustrations put in the figure’s hand is what the constellation originally was, surviving inside the picture that replaced it.
Correction
Commonly saidVirgo has always been a maiden, and the sheaf of wheat is a later symbol of harvest added to the image.
The order runs the other way. The grain is the older element and the maiden is the later one. The Babylonian figure is a furrow with an ear of grain 1; the Greek Parthenos is a reinterpretation of an agricultural image into a human one, part of a broader pattern in which Babylonian celestial figures were reassigned to Greek mythological subjects as the material moved west 3. Aries makes the same move in the other direction: the Babylonian figure there is a hired agricultural labourer, and the ram is the Greek overlay 4.
What this leaves standing is more interesting than what it removes. Anyone looking at a modern Virgo illustration is looking at an image three thousand years old and more, renamed twice, which has still kept the object in its hand.

Two features of this table stand out. Mercury both rules and is exalted in Virgo, and it is the only planet in the whole scheme exalted in a sign it already rules; every other planet is exalted as a guest. The sources notice the anomaly and none of them resolves it. And Venus falls in Virgo at the same degree at which it is exalted in Pisces, which is a structural consequence of the way falls are generated. The four layers
The sign’s content has a datable four-layer history, and the continuity of the name across all four disguises how much the content changed.
- A Babylonian name and figure: the Furrow, in a celestial compendium that describes the visible sky 1.
- A Greek mythological reassignment: Parthenos, and the various maiden figures later attached to her.
- A Hellenistic technical apparatus: rulership, exaltation, triplicity, bounds, faces, and the melothesic body part, each first stated in a datable text 5 bk. I6.
- A modern character profile, whose immediate ancestor is the standardised mail-order horoscope paragraph of the 1890s to 1910s, and which reached its present form in the newspaper column of the later 1930s 7.

The sign and the constellation
Tropical Virgo is a thirty-degree arc. The IAU constellation Virgo is a region of nearly forty-four degrees of ecliptic longitude, the widest of the thirteen the ecliptic passes through, and nearly seven times the width of Scorpius. The two objects share a name and very little else; the relationship between them is set out in Three Reference Frames.
Gap in the evidence
When and where the furrow became a maiden is not recoverable from the surviving material. The Babylonian name is secure and Shala’s identification with it is attested in MUL.APIN 2; the transition to the Greek maiden is inferred from those two named endpoints, with no documentation in between. Nor is it established whether Shala was understood as the constellation itself, as its owner, or as neither: Rogers reports the identification without stating the relationship 2. The earliest pictographs instead show Ishtar, with lions and holding vegetable produce, and Rogers’s own reading, offered as a suggestion, is that “perhaps the attributes of Shala were derived from Ishtar” 2; the hedge is his, and this entry does not resolve it into a stronger claim.

Rogers is an astronomer synthesising Assyriological scholarship for astronomers, not an Assyriologist: his own sources are Hunger and Pingree's MUL.APIN edition, Gössmann's Planetarium Babylonicum, van der Waerden, and Black and Green. The paper is refereed, heavily cited, and explicit that it is offering inferences in places, which it marks with "I suggest" and "perhaps". Those marks are the author's own and should survive into any entry that uses the passage. A companion Paper II covers the Mediterranean and Greek traditions and is not held here.
