Gemini
Gemini occupies the third thirty-degree arc of the tropical zodiac, from 60 to 90 degrees of ecliptic longitude measured from the March equinox. The constellation is anchored by two bright, close-set stars near its northern end, conventionally read as marking the heads of the twin figures the sign is named for. Which twins those are, and since when, is a more interesting question than it looks.
Names, and what the earliest one says
The Babylonian constellation is MUL.MAŠ.TAB.BA.GAL.GAL, “the Great Twins”, identified with a paired Mesopotamian divinity 1. John H. Rogers, an astronomer synthesising Assyriological scholarship, names that pair: the Great Twins were Lugalgirra and Meslamta-ea, armed twin gods who guarded doorways and carried aspects of Nergal 2. A separate Lesser Twins lay to their south and were later combined into the same constellation 2. The Greek name, Didymoi, “twins”, is a straight translation of the plural noun and nothing more. Aratus, writing in the third century BCE, uses it without naming which two figures are meant; the specific identification with Castor and Pollux, the Dioskouroi, is supplied a generation later by Eratosthenes 32.

Commonly saidGemini has always meant Castor and Pollux, the twin sons of Zeus.
The pairing with two named brothers is the youngest part of the name. The Babylonian figure is already a pair of twins, identified as Lugalgirra and Meslamta-ea, long before the material reaches Greek hands 12. The earliest Greek name for the constellation translates only the plural noun; Aratus calls it Didymoi without saying which twins are pictured, and the identification with Castor and Pollux is supplied afterward, by Eratosthenes 3. Rogers reports that later authors did not settle on that pair either: Hyginus and Ptolemy are said to have called the same two stars Apollo and Heracles instead 2, a third and fourth name for a figure that had already changed identity once.
What survives the correction is the twinning itself: a paired figure, carried across two languages and at least three distinct mythological fillings, running continuously from the earliest attested naming to the present sign. The brothers are the newest thing about Gemini, and not even the last word on which brothers.
The same pattern of a Babylonian occupational or generic figure receiving a specific Greek mythological filling recurs at Virgo, a furrow read as a maiden, and at Aries, a hired labourer read as a ram. Gemini’s version is narrower than either: the category itself, a pair of twins, did not change at the crossing, only the particular brothers named within it Virgo.
Ptolemy’s own fourfold classification of the signs by season boundary calls Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces “bicorporeal”, double-bodied 4 bk. I ch. 11. The term describes where these four signs sit relative to the solstices and equinoxes, and has nothing to do with any sign’s name or figure. For Gemini it happens that the double-bodied classification and the twinned figure point the same way, which is a coincidence of category.

Gemini is one of Mercury’s two domiciles, along with Virgo Mercury, and it carries no exaltation in the traditional sevenfold scheme. Only seven of the twelve signs do, since there are seven classical planets to exalt and each is assigned a single sign; Gemini is one of the five left over. Gemini’s detriment belongs to Jupiter, in Sagittarius, the sign directly opposite it Sagittarius, for the same reason Sagittarius’s detriment belongs to Mercury, in Gemini. Detriment is derived from the domicile table by opposition, so there is no second place for the assignment to be transcribed wrongly.
The Egyptian bounds of Gemini, this site’s default, are textually secure and undisputed across the whole transmission, unlike the table treated next 4 bk. I5. The Ptolemaic bounds are a separate and more fragile table, recovered by Ptolemy from a manuscript he says he could barely read, and Gemini is the sign where that fragility stops being a caveat in the introduction and becomes a visible split between named witnesses.
Contested

Every surviving Greek witness, the critical edition of the Greek and the standard English translation made from it, gives Mars the fourth bound, 20 to 26 degrees, and Saturn the fifth, 26 to 30 4 bk. I6. Lilly’s printed table reverses both the order and the widths, giving Saturn the fourth bound, 21 to 25, and Mars the fifth, 25 to 30, and differs on the Jupiter and Venus bounds as well 7 bk. I. Nearly all modern astrology software carries Lilly’s row under the label “Ptolemaic”, so the version in the widest circulation today is a seventeenth-century printing decision.

The sign and the constellation
The IAU constellation Gemini spans about 27.85 degrees of ecliptic longitude, slightly narrower than the fixed thirty degrees of the tropical sign. Seven of the twelve are narrower than their sign, and Gemini is the widest of those seven: only Capricornus, at 27.83 degrees, comes close Three Reference Frames. The two objects share a name and, for the reasons above, share less history than the name suggests.
Gap in the evidence
Rogers reports that Hyginus and Ptolemy called the twins Apollo and Heracles 2; this entry has not independently checked that against Ptolemy’s own Greek text, and does not assert that the Almagest or the Tetrabiblos itself uses those names rather than some other designation. What is sourced is Rogers’s report of the claim.
Rogers names the individual identities behind the paired Mesopotamian divinity as Lugalgirra and Meslamta-ea, twin gods who guarded doorways and carried aspects of Nergal 2. Their roles beyond that, and the literal sense of either name, are not detailed further in the source consulted here.

The paper is refereed, heavily cited, and explicit that it is offering inferences in places, which it marks with "I suggest" and "perhaps".
