Sagittarius

Sagittarius occupies the ninth thirty-degree arc of the tropical zodiac, from 240 to 270 degrees of ecliptic longitude, measured from the March equinox. In the direction of the constellation of the same name lies the centre of the galaxy, a fact that owes nothing to antiquity and is checkable with a radio telescope. No tradition treated in this entry knew that; it belongs entirely to twentieth-century radio astronomy, and it is a reminder that the constellations keep accumulating meaning independent of the zodiac built on top of them centuries earlier.

Names, and what the earliest one says

The Babylonian constellation is MUL.PA.BIL.SAG, named for the god Pabilsag 1. Of the twelve, this is the clearest case of a Greek figure simplifying a composite Mesopotamian one. John H. Rogers, an astronomer synthesising Assyriological scholarship, records Pabilsag as “a little-known Sumerian god, later identified with Ninurta” 2. A second Babylonian name is also recorded for the figure, Nedu, “soldier,” who was also the gatekeeper of the underworld; Rogers suggests he “perhaps” represents a different tradition, and states plainly that it is not known whether he carried a bow and arrow 2. Whether either divinity, Pabilsag or Nedu, was relevant to the zodiacal sign, a centaur with a bow already present on a few boundary stones by the second millennium BCE, is likewise not known 2.

The composite form has more than one source. Among the boundary-stone symbols Rogers lists a centaur with a bow, which he calls “an even more wondrous chimaera, with two heads, two wings, and two tails”, the same combination later shown on the Dendera Zodiac 2. The Greek tradition received the constellation as Toxotes, “the Archer” 3, and its reception kept the weapon while dropping the extra heads, wings and tails; but it did not arrive at a centaur directly.

The earliest Greek portrayal of the Archer was, on Rogers’s account, “apparently a satyr (with two legs, of a goat) rather than a centaur (with four legs, of a horse),” said to be the son of the goat-god Pan and the mortal Eupheme. Eratosthenes described him as a satyr, and this is how he appears on the Farnese Atlas. Only in classical times did he become a centaur, as the four-legged Babylonian sign was reconciled with the Greek constellation 2. Rogers’s own reading of the whole figure is offered as a suggestion: the sign “may represent confusion between two parallel Mesopotamian figures” 2.

The satyr’s parentage connects to a name that circulates elsewhere. In the Greek tradition, Crotus is said to be the satyr son of Pan, which would explain why a satyr reading of the Archer existed at all. Rogers’s own account does not use the name Crotus, and this entry has not independently confirmed the identification against a source in its pool; it is recorded here as context for the satyr description above.

Degrees are counted within the sign. A bound runs from the previous figure up to but not including its own.

Sagittarius is Jupiter’s first domicile, opposite Gemini, which Mercury rules; Gemini is the more useful comparison than a description of Sagittarius by itself. Sagittarius also carries the fire triplicity, with a day ruler, a night ruler and a participating ruler in the Dorothean scheme, part of a fivefold apparatus first stated in a datable Hellenistic text 4 bk. I5. Ptolemy drops the participating ruler as an independent category across all four triplicities, fire included, though it is the water row where that difference produces a three-way dispute among modern readers. Jupiter’s two domiciles, Sagittarius and Pisces, sit on either side of the Aries-Scorpio pair held by Mars in the Thema Mundi ordering, the traditional arrangement in which each planet’s distance from the Sun sets its distance from the Cancer-Leo pair held by the luminaries; Jupiter takes up that arrangement from the planet’s side. Sagittarius is also one of the four mutable signs, with Gemini, Virgo and Pisces: the signs that close a season, and its opposite, Gemini, is the mutable sign of the same axis.

The sign and the constellation

Tropical Sagittarius is a fixed thirty-degree arc. The IAU constellation Sagittarius spans 33.42 degrees of ecliptic longitude, wider than the sign that shares its name and one of the larger constellations the ecliptic crosses, in contrast to its narrow neighbour Scorpius on the other side of Ophiuchus. What a tropical sign is a measure of, and what an IAU constellation is a measure of, are two different questions answered by two different systems built for two different purposes; the argument is made in full at Three Reference Frames. Because the constellation is wider than the sign, a body spends more time within the boundaries of IAU Sagittarius than within the tropical sign of the same name, the mirror image of the situation in narrow Scorpius on the other side of Ophiuchus.

Gap in the evidence

The literal etymology of the name “Pabilsag” is not given by the source cited above, which records only that he was “a little-known Sumerian god, later identified with Ninurta”; no linguistic breakdown is supplied here, and none is invented to fill the space. Rogers’s own reading of the whole sign is offered as a suggestion, that it “may represent confusion between two parallel Mesopotamian figures,” and that hedge is reported above. Whether the satyr Archer he describes is the same figure elsewhere named Crotus, son of Pan, is likewise reported above as an unconfirmed connection.

The paper is refereed, heavily cited, and explicit that it is offering inferences in places, which it marks with "I suggest" and "perhaps".
