Taurus

Taurus occupies the second thirty-degree arc of the tropical zodiac, from 30 to 60 degrees of ecliptic longitude measured from the March equinox. In the corresponding constellation lie two of the sky’s most recognisable naked-eye star clusters, the Pleiades and the Hyades, both used as calendar markers long before either was folded into the picture of a bull.

Names, and what the earliest one says

The Babylonian constellation is MUL.GU4.AN.NA, “the Bull of Heaven”, and the Greek name Tauros, “bull”, is a straight translation of it; the Latin Taurus follows the Greek in turn 1. No reinterpretation happens at this crossing, unlike the furrow that becomes a maiden in Virgo or the hired labourer that becomes a ram in Aries: the animal identity is continuous from the Babylonian figure to the present Virgo. What Greek mythology supplies is a story. The tale of Zeus disguised as a bull to carry off Europa is narrative material laid onto an already-bovine constellation 2.

Rogers, an astronomer synthesising Assyriological scholarship, adds that the Bull marked the spring equinox and the start of the new year for the Sumerians. He also notes that the modern figure, showing only the animal’s front half emerging from a storm cloud, is “reminiscent of the Bull of Adad” in the Mesopotamian pictographs, and that only in classical Greece were the horns turned forwards to give the familiar picture 3.

The Pleiades, the Hyades, and the oldest star calendar

Both clusters sit inside the same stretch of sky the Babylonians and the Greeks named for a bull. Rogers states plainly that the animal’s head “has always been the Hyades, including Aldebaran”, and that the Pleiades “may have formed the upper horn” 3; the hedge on the Pleiades is his. The Hyades, on this reading, are more than a landmark inside the constellation’s boundary: they are the feature that gives the animal its head at all. The Pleiades in particular also anchor the oldest surviving European star calendar. Hesiod’s instructions for the farming year are keyed to their heliacal rising and setting rather than to any civil calendar, and the same cluster goes on to anchor the later parapegma tradition, the inscribed almanacs correlating stellar phases with weather and the civil year 4. The bright orange star marking the bull’s eye, Aldebaran, appears embedded in the Hyades but is not a physical member of the cluster: it lies much closer to Earth and sits on the same line of sight by chance. A modern reader who locates Taurus by its head, the Hyades, and its possible horn, the Pleiades, is using the same landmarks a farmer used three thousand years ago, for a different purpose and by a different route.

The identification of the head and the use of the same stars as a farming calendar are nonetheless two different claims. Rogers settles the first: the Hyades give the bull its head, by design, on his reading. He does not connect that identification to Hesiod’s agricultural use of the Pleiades’ heliacal rising, and no other source consulted here does either; the constellation figure and the calendar almanac may have been built centuries apart, for different purposes, out of the same convenient stars. Parapegmata, the inscribed almanacs that turn Hesiod’s method into a genre, regularly key entries to stars in this same stretch of sky 5, and as with any stellar calendar the dates those entries specify have drifted with precession since they were recorded; the mechanism is treated in full at Precession of the Equinoxes rather than repeated here.

Taurus is ruled by Venus Venus, and hosts the Moon’s exaltation, the only lunar exaltation in the whole scheme. Its earth triplicity, Venus by day, the Moon by night, Mars participating, is undisputed across the tradition, unlike the water triplicity discussed at Essential Dignity, where three positions are on record and none of them has been retired.

Taurus’s detriment belongs to Mars, in Scorpio, the sign directly opposite it Scorpio, for the same reason Scorpio’s detriment belongs to Venus, in Taurus. Detriment is derived from the domicile table by opposition, so there is no second place for the assignment to be transcribed wrongly Essential Dignity.

The sign’s own bounds row carries a small, dateable textual fault. Renaissance printings descending from the 1553 Camerarius retranslation reverse the order of the Jupiter and Saturn bounds in Taurus, a compositor’s slip that Cardan corrected at the time. A reader who meets the reversed order in an old printing is looking at a typesetting fault Essential Dignity.

The sign and the constellation

The IAU constellation Taurus is among the widest along the ecliptic, spanning about 36.72 degrees of ecliptic longitude against the sign’s fixed 30; of the thirteen constellations the ecliptic crosses, only Virgo and Pisces are wider Three Reference Frames. That width is computed from where the 1930 boundary lines were drawn 6, a figure this site derives, since Delporte tabulated none, and it has no bearing on the tropical sign, which stays a plain thirty degrees regardless of how the constellation beneath it is carved up.

The calendrical role described above belongs to the stars themselves; the tropical sign built from the equinox has no part in it. The tropical arc called Taurus has slid away from the Pleiades and the Hyades by the same precessional motion that carries every fixed-star calendar out of step with the seasonal frame; a reader consulting a tropical Taurus placement today is not thereby consulting either cluster.

Gap in the evidence

Rogers settles the identification and leaves the history behind it open. Whether the Hyades’ standing as the bull’s head predates, follows, or arose independently of the Pleiades’ use as a farming-calendar marker is not stated by Rogers or by any other source consulted here, and no source gives a date for when the head-and-horn reading was first made.
