Scorpio

Scorpio occupies the eighth thirty-degree arc of the tropical zodiac, from 210 to 240 degrees of ecliptic longitude, measured from the March equinox. In the constellation of the same name lies Antares, one of the four brightest stars that sit close to the ecliptic. Its name is built from the Greek for “rival of Ares”: the star’s naked-eye red rivals the colour of Mars, the planet that has ruled this sign since the Hellenistic period, and Mars takes up that pairing from the planet’s side. The constellation Antares sits in is also the clearest single case on this site of how little a sign and a constellation have in common, because of how small it has become.

Names, and what the earliest one says

The Babylonian constellation is MUL.GIR.TAB, “the Scorpion” 1. Unlike the furrow that became a maiden or the composite deity that became an archer, this is one of the straightforward cases in the twelve: the Greek name Skorpios is a direct translation, animal for animal, with no reassignment to a human or mythological subject, unlike the reassignments that are common elsewhere as Mesopotamian celestial figures moved west 23.

What changed was not the animal but its extent, and that change began earlier than the Greeks. John H. Rogers, an astronomer synthesising Assyriological scholarship, reports that the Scorpion “was larger at first; the stars that are now Libra were its two claws” 4: the constellation the Babylonians drew already reached into the territory the Greeks would later call Chelae. The two figures had parted by the time of the Three Stars Each texts, the earliest systematic Mesopotamian star lists, “at least as early as” that phase, in Rogers’s own hedge, though the memory of the joint figure outlasted the split. so an independent Balance and a scorpion’s-claw reading of the same stars stood side by side in a single compendium. Greek writers from Aratus onward called the region beside it Chelae, “the claws,” and treated the claws as part of the Scorpion; Ptolemy’s Almagest still describes the region that way in the second century CE. Those claws were later given an independent identity as Libra, the balance, restored under Julius Caesar in the first century BCE 34. The figure that Aratus and the early Ptolemaic astronomical tradition knew was accordingly larger than the one carried into the modern boundaries: it once extended into stars that now belong to its neighbour. Libra takes up that side of the same change, including the Roman restoration under Caesar’s name. The scorpion’s body and sting, including Antares, stayed inside the figure the Greeks called Skorpios throughout; only the claws changed hands.

Correction

For Scorpio that claim fails more sharply than for any other sign. The tropical sign is a fixed thirty-degree arc. The IAU constellation Scorpius was bounded in 1930 5, and, computed by this site from where those boundaries fall, spans only 6.59 degrees of ecliptic longitude: the narrowest of the thirteen constellations the ecliptic crosses, and about one seventh the width of Virgo, the widest. Immediately to its east, the region assigned to Ophiuchus takes 18.60 degrees, nearly three times as much. How that thirteenth constellation bears on the sign scheme is treated in full at Three Reference Frames; the point to add here is narrower. The Scorpion the IAU drew is a remnant of the one classical astronomers described, because its claws are doing duty a few degrees to the west, under a different name, as the pans of a balance. Rejoined, Scorpius and Libra together would rank close to tenth by area among the eighty-eight IAU constellations, a computation this site makes from the boundaries Delporte fixed 5. What is left under the name Scorpius is the remainder of one of the larger ancient figures in the sky, cut down to its narrowest constellation.

Scorpio is Mars’s second domicile, opposite Taurus, which Venus rules; the two signs are each other’s detriment as well as each other’s opposite, and Taurus is the more informative comparison than a description of Scorpio in isolation. Scorpio also sits in the water triplicity, the one row of the triplicity table that three named authorities assign three different ways, in a scheme whose domicile, exaltation, triplicity, bound and face were each first set out in a datable Hellenistic text 6 bk. I7. That dispute, and the modern reassignment of Scorpio to a newly discovered outer planet after 1930, which most contemporary practice runs alongside its Hellenistic domicile, are both set out in Essential Dignity. Scorpio is also one of the four fixed signs, with Taurus, Leo and Aquarius: the signs that hold the midpoint of a season, and Taurus is again the relevant comparison, since it is both the fixed sign of the opposite element and Scorpio’s opposite by domicile.

The sign and the constellation

Tropical Scorpio is a thirty-degree arc like every other sign. The IAU constellation Scorpius is a region of under seven degrees of ecliptic longitude, small enough that a body can cross it in about a week. A constellation that narrow is the sharpest available demonstration that a tropical sign measures seasonal position and reports nothing about which stars a body stands in front of; the general argument, including the status of Ophiuchus as a thirteenth constellation the ecliptic crosses, is made once at Three Reference Frames.

Gap in the evidence

Rogers gives the split a floor and no date: the two figures had parted “at least as early as” the Three Stars Each texts, without stating when that phase itself falls, so how much earlier than MUL.APIN the split happened is not fixed. And unlike Aquarius, Capricorn, or Virgo, where he names the deity behind the figure, Rogers records no divine identity for the Scorpion itself in the material this entry draws on; whether Mesopotamian tradition associated MUL.GIR.TAB with a named god, as it did several of its neighbours, is not settled by what is cited here.
