Libra

Libra occupies the seventh thirty-degree arc of the tropical zodiac, from 180 to 210 degrees of ecliptic longitude, measured from the March equinox; its first degree is, by definition, the September equinox point. Of the twelve figures behind the signs, a ram, a bull, twins, a crab, a lion, a maiden, a scorpion, an archer, a goat-fish, a water-bearer and two fish among them, Libra alone is not a living thing.

Names, and what the earliest one says

The Babylonian constellation is ZIB.BA.AN.NA, “the scales of heaven” 1, an independent balance reported elsewhere to be associated with Shamash, the sun-god, in his role as god of justice; that association is not independently confirmed here against the source cited for the Mesopotamian material generally 2. What happened to that figure on its way to the Greek zodiac is a three-stage history with a documented middle stage.

John H. Rogers, an astronomer synthesising Assyriological scholarship, gives a fuller account of that independent balance’s early history and of how it was later folded into, and then split back out of, its neighbouring constellation. The Scorpion was larger at first, and the stars now assigned to Libra were its two claws 3; the two figures had already parted by the Three Stars Each texts, the earliest systematic Mesopotamian star lists, but the memory of the joint figure did not disappear with the split. MUL.APIN still listed Libra as:

“The Scales, the horn of the Scorpion”

so an independent Balance and a scorpion’s-claw reading of the same stars stood side by side in a single compendium. Scorpio takes up the Scorpion’s side of the same history, including the combined size of the original figure. Rogers’s own suggestion for why the split happened at all is that the Scales were perhaps a “farming” constellation 3, the scales of the village market: the same split between a divine, heraldic tradition and a rustic, working one that recurs across the Mesopotamian zodiac.

Greek astronomical writers from Aratus and Eratosthenes through Ptolemy’s Almagest called the region Chelae, “the Claws”, and treated it as part of the neighbouring Scorpion 4. Aratus and Ptolemy still used that name, Chelai, and added a claim about its origin: that Libra came from Chaldaea 3. The independent Balance was restored under Julius Caesar, who represented himself on coins holding the Scales of Justice; the constellation of Libra, the point of balance at the autumn equinox, was ordained in his name 3.

Correction

Commonly saidLibra is the odd sign out: a late addition standing in for a figure the ancient tradition never really had.

The record runs the other way. An independent balance is the oldest attested figure for this stretch of sky: the Babylonian name is secure 1, and its association with a sun-god of justice, though widely reported, is not one this entry has independently confirmed against the source cited for the Mesopotamian material generally 2. What came later was a subtraction. Greek astronomical writing folded this stretch of sky into the neighbouring Scorpion as its Claws for centuries, and the independent Balance had to be restored, which is a different and more interesting event than an invention would be 4. The figure now pictured as scales is the return of the oldest name this part of the sky is attested to have carried, and the return had a named agent and a dated act behind it: Julius Caesar, who put the Scales of Justice on his own coinage, is credited with ordaining Libra as the sign of the autumn balance 3.

The three-stage account above, an independent Babylonian balance, a Greek period as the Scorpion’s claws, and a Roman restoration, is the shape given both in the standard narrative histories of the transmission 4 and, with the Babylonian stage now dated more precisely, in Rogers 3.

Degrees are counted within the sign. A bound runs from the previous figure up to but not including its own.

Libra’s ruler is Venus Venus; its opposite by detriment is Aries, Mars’s domicile Aries. Saturn is exalted in Libra, at the twenty-first degree, while the Sun, exalted in Aries, falls here at the nineteenth: Libra carries both an exaltation and a fall, from two different planets. The degree itself descends from the Babylonian material; Ptolemy gives exaltation signs and no degrees 2; the full provenance split is set out in Essential Dignity.

The IAU constellation Libra spans about 23.24 degrees of ecliptic longitude, narrower than the tropical sign, and borders Scorpius, the narrowest of the thirteen constellations the ecliptic crosses at under seven degrees: the same Scorpion whose claws, on the Greek naming, once reached into this very stretch of sky Three Reference Frames. The claws’ own brightest star, the Northern Claw, β Librae, was rated the brightest star in the region by Eratosthenes and Hipparchus; to Ptolemy and to al-Ṣūfī it was, like Antares in the neighbouring Scorpion, second magnitude. Since then β Librae has gradually faded while Antares has brightened 3, a real change in the sky that bears on why the claws were once the more prominent part of the joint figure. Gap in the evidence

Rogers leaves two points unsettled, and this entry leaves them so. What the Tetrabiblos itself calls this region, as against the Almagest, is not distinguished in his account: he writes “Ptolemy” without specifying which work, and no printed edition of the Tetrabiblos has been checked here to settle it independently.

The claim that al-Ṣūfī’s tenth-century Arabic tradition carried the Claws and the Balance side by side circulates in popular reference works and is stated nowhere in the scholarship this entry can cite. Rogers mentions al-Ṣūfī only for the stellar magnitudes reported above. The claim is recorded here as something to check.

The paper is refereed, heavily cited, and explicit that it is offering inferences in places, which it marks with "I suggest" and "perhaps".
