Supersedes preetham-shirley-smits-1999-daylight as the graphics-standard daylight sky model: fit to the same first-principles radiative-transfer simulation approach, but explicitly built to fix that model's known weak points at high atmospheric turbidity and near sunset (i.e. near the horizon), and it also accounts for ground albedo. Bibliographic details (volume 31, issue 4, article 95, pp. 95:1-95:9, 2012) verified against the dblp bibliographic record (DBLP:journals/tog/HosekW12); the DOI resolves to the ACM Digital Library record. The authors' reference implementation (ArHosekSkyModel) is published under a 3-clause BSD licence (copyright Lukas Hosek and Alexander Wilkie, 2012-2013), confirmed by reading the licence header directly in the public source (e.g. github.com/ebruneton/clear-sky-models). No patent encumbrance was found. Recommended over the 1999 Preetham model for this site given the emphasis on physically real behaviour near the horizon, at some cost in implementation complexity (full-spectral fit vs. a simpler closed-form CIE-xyY fit).
