The reference treatment of a spherical atmosphere in computer graphics: single and multiple scattering of sunlight by air (Rayleigh) and aerosols (Mie) integrated along a sightline through concentric shells of falling density, with the Earth's own shadow falling out of the geometry rather than being painted in. It is the model whose coefficients (the scattering and extinction of air and aerosols per metre, and their scale heights) the sky in the three-dimensional panel integrates.
