The Graeco-Arabic Translation Movement

Across roughly two centuries, from the founding of Baghdad in 762 to the end of the tenth century, a large body of Greek scientific and philosophical writing, along with some Middle Persian and Sanskrit material, was translated into Arabic. It is the hinge through which most of the Hellenistic astronomical and astrological corpus this site cites, Ptolemy above all, reached the medieval and then the modern world, and through which an Indian astronomical tradition reached it as well; see The Zīj al-Sindhind1 pp. 103-123.

Why it happened

The older account treats the movement as a natural continuation of late antique scholarship, Greek learning drifting east because scholars carried it with them. The modern account argues it was a deliberate program, driven by patronage, and asks what the patrons wanted 2.

Astrology was one answer among several. Abbasid caliphs and their courts commissioned genethlialogical and electional readings as a matter of state business, and the astrologers who provided them, several of Persian and Zoroastrian background, had a direct stake in accurate planetary tables and in the Greek and Indian technical literature behind them. Māshāʾallāh and members of the Nawbakht family are recorded as advising on the astrologically elected moment for laying out Baghdad itself in 762 3; see Māshāʾallāh. Medicine, administration and philosophy supplied other, independent reasons, and no single motive accounts for the whole two centuries 2.

Correction

Commonly saidArabic science in this period was chiefly the preservation of a Greek inheritance, with astrology as an incidental by-product.

Astrology was not incidental. It was, on the caliphal court’s own reckoning, one of the concrete uses the translated material was for, alongside medicine and administration, and its practitioners were among the movement’s earliest patrons and participants 3. An account of this period that treats astrology as a footnote misreads why the commissioning happened at all.

“The House of Wisdom” is a later name for something less certain

A popular account gives the movement a single address: Bayt al-Ḥikma, “the House of Wisdom,” pictured as a grand state academy of translators and scientists founded under Hārūn al-Rashīd or al-Maʾmūn. The contemporary record is thinner than the legend. What is well attested is a caliphal library of that name holding books, including material inherited from Sasanian administrative practice; what is not well attested is the later image of an organized research institute coordinating the translation effort as a whole 2.

Gap in the evidence

Translation work in this period is better documented as a network of patronage, individual scholars commissioned by named viziers, physicians and courtiers, than as the output of one institution. How much of the later Bayt al-Ḥikma legend reflects a real expansion of the library’s role under al-Maʾmūn, and how much is retrospective embellishment, is argued in the secondary literature rather than settled by it.

What travelled, and what was made new

Ptolemy’s Almagest and Tetrabiblos were translated and repeatedly retranslated, along with works of Aristotle, Galen and the mathematical corpus; the Sanskrit material behind the Zīj al-Sindhind arrived by a separate, Indian route in the 770s 1 pp. 103-123. None of this arrived inert. Arabic astronomers corrected observational parameters, extended computational methods, and in the case of historical astrology built new doctrine on inherited foundations, as Abū Maʿshar did with the theory of planetary conjunctions.

One concrete trace of the Arabic stage survives in this site’s own dignity tables. Ptolemy’s astrological text itself passed through Arabic hands before any of it reached Latin Europe, and the surviving Arabic-line witnesses disagree with the Greek critical editions at several points in the bounds table, disagreements this corpus reports; see Essential Dignity.

Gap in the evidence

Which Sanskrit siddhānta the 770s embassy carried, and how much Sanskrit material entered Arabic astronomy beyond that single episode, are open questions treated in The Zīj al-Sindhind.
