Aquarius
Aquarius occupies the eleventh thirty-degree arc of the tropical zodiac, from 300 to 330 degrees of ecliptic longitude measured from the March equinox. The IAU constellation of the same name is one of the fainter regions the ecliptic crosses: its brightest stars sit close to third magnitude, well short of the bright anchors that mark some neighbouring constellations, such as Spica in Virgo. What the region lacks in brightness it makes up in a name whose history is unusually well documented, and in which the water most people associate with the sign turns out to come from a different place than the name does.
Names, and what the earliest one says
The Babylonian constellation is MUL.GU.LA, “the Great One” 1. The name is a status epithet: it says the figure is great, and says nothing about pouring.
The figure behind that name is the god Ea, “the beneficent god of earth and life, who dwelt in the abyssal waters,” pictured “with two streams running from his hands or shoulders”; on John H. Rogers’s account, an astronomer synthesising the Assyriological editions of MUL.APIN and the Mesopotamian seal and boundary-stone corpus, this figure, not the status epithet alone, is what became Aquarius 2. The identification is anchored to dated objects. The Seal of Adda, cut around 2300 BCE and held in the British Museum as WA 89115, is captioned by Rogers as “the god Ea, with two streams filled with fish running from his shoulders, holding an eagle” 2, and two fragmentary boundary stones show Ea again “pouring two streams of water as on the earlier seals” 2. MUL.APIN gives the figure the name recorded above, Gu.La, which Rogers renders “The great one” 2, and across roughly 4400 to 2200 BCE Aquarius marked the winter solstice, one of the four oldest constellation figures on record 2. Something does change between Mesopotamia and Greece: the two streams become one. “In Greek times the figure was unnamed, with a single vase from which poured a substantial stream down to Piscis Austrinus” 2.
Two figures tied to Ea sit close together in this material and are easy to conflate. The Adda seal figure is Ea himself, the Aquarius prototype, and the goat-fish that keeps him company in the boundary-stone tradition is a distinct image, attested on its own seal from Ur Capricorn 2.
The Greek name is Hydrochoos, “the water-pourer,” and the Latin Aquarius follows it. Reading Hydrochoos as a plain translation of MUL.GU.LA does not work: a status title and a description of an action are different kinds of name. What the Greek name renders instead is the pictured attribute: Rogers reports the name Gu.La and Ea’s streaming iconography as two separate strands of the record, and the Greek water-pourer carries the second of them into a new language once the Babylonian epithet had stopped meaning anything to a Greek audience 2, consistent with the broader pattern in which Mesopotamian celestial figures were adapted as the material moved west 3.

Aquarius is one of four signs, together with Gemini, Leo and Sagittarius, assigned neither an exaltation nor a fall in the sevenfold classical scheme; every other sign carries at least one of the two, and the full apparatus is set out at Essential Dignity. Domicile rulership is undisputed across the tradition: Saturn by day, the outermost and coldest of the seven by Ptolemy’s own account of its physical quality Saturn. Modern practice divides over whether Uranus, discovered in 1781, replaces or supplements Saturn here; a traditional-revival school retains Saturn alone 4. Aquarius sits opposite Leo, the Sun’s own sign Leo, so the pair at the top of the wheel and the pair at the bottom are opposite one another twice over.
The sign and the constellation
Tropical Aquarius is a thirty-degree arc. The IAU constellation Aquarius spans about 24 degrees of ecliptic longitude, one of the narrower zodiacal constellations though nowhere near as extreme as Scorpius, and its faint stars give it little of the visual drama some of its neighbours have Three Reference Frames.
Aquarius is also where the phrase “the Age of Aquarius” points. The March equinox point is currently inside the constellation Pisces, not Aquarius, under any boundary convention in use Pisces, and it must cross the whole width of Pisces, at a fixed rate of about one degree every 71.6 years, before reaching the Aquarius boundary Precession of the Equinoxes. Because the exact line at which one IAU region ends and the next begins is a cataloguing convention fixed in 1930 for a purpose unrelated to any zodiacal question, and not a physical feature of the sky, the date at which the equinox point is said to cross into Aquarius depends on which boundary and which precession constant is used, which is why published dates for the age range across centuries Three Reference Frames.
Correction
Commonly saidThe Age of Aquarius is an ancient astrological doctrine, inherited from antiquity, naming the two-thousand-year era the sign is now entering.
A doctrine of successive ages keyed to precession presupposes that precession has been measured and mapped onto the zodiac’s boundaries. Precession was first reported, at a rate of not less than one degree per century, by Hipparchus in the second century BCE 5 bk. VII chs. 2-3, and no Babylonian or Hellenistic source available to this entry describes a sequence of numbered zodiacal ages built on that measurement. Babylonian astronomy, in particular, worked in a star-fixed frame in which the effects of precession accumulate without being identified as a phenomenon at all, a point argued at length elsewhere Precession of the Equinoxes.
What is real and well measured is the mechanism the claim borrows from. The precession rate is one of the more precisely determined slow quantities in positional astronomy, and published Age-of-Aquarius dates disagree because the answer depends on which constellation boundary and which precession constant is adopted. Fix both, and a crossing date follows by arithmetic Three Reference Frames.
Gap in the evidence
Who first proposed a doctrine of numbered precessional ages tied to the zodiac signs, and when, is not established from the sources available to this entry. None of them documents the twentieth-century sidereal or occult astrology in the detail that question would need, so the claim above is limited to what the precession mechanism itself supports.
